Eyes on Eternity

O soul, are you weary and troubled?

No light in the darkness you see?

There’s light for a look at the Savior,

And life more abundant and free!

How many today feel weary, worn down by the constant noise of this world? The shadows of fear, uncertainty, and despair grow darker each passing day. Yet, just as Helen Lemmel’s hymn reminds us, there is light for those who look to Christ. Jesus Himself declared, “I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life” (John 8:12).

That single look—the gaze of faith—pierces through the gloom. Just as the Israelites looked to the bronze serpent in the wilderness and were healed (Numbers 21:8–9), so too we are healed and made whole when we fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of faith (Hebrews 12:2).

Thro’ death into life everlasting,

He passed, and we follow Him there;

O’er us sin no more hath dominion—

For more than conquer’rs we are!

The cross was not the end—it was the gateway to life. Through His resurrection, Christ opened the way to eternity. Paul declared, “But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep” (1 Corinthians 15:20). His victory over death means our victory.

Sin once held us captive, but it no longer has dominion over the believer. Romans 6:14 assures us, “For sin shall not be master over you, for you are not under law but under grace.” And not only are we free, we are more than conquerors (Romans 8:37)—a prophetic reminder that even in a world that grows hostile to truth, the believer’s destiny is secure in Christ.

His Word shall not fail you—He promised;

Believe Him, and all will be well:

Then go to a world that is dying,

His perfect salvation to tell!

Every promise of God stands firm. The hymn points us to the enduring Word of the Lord, echoing Isaiah 40:8: “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.”

Our hope is not in human governments, fleeting movements, or technological utopias—it is anchored in the eternal promises of God. The hymn calls us beyond personal comfort. If we truly believe His promises, then we are compelled to share His salvation with a perishing world. The Great Commission still stands: “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations” (Matthew 28:19). In these last days, when deception abounds and hearts grow cold, the world desperately needs to see Christians boldly proclaiming the unchanging gospel.

REFRAIN:

Turn your eyes upon Jesus,

Look full in His wonderful face,

And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,

In the light of His glory and grace.

Here lies the heart of the hymn: perspective. What we fix our gaze upon shapes our lives. When Peter looked at the waves, he began to sink; when he looked at Christ, he walked on water (Matthew 14:30).

The world clamors for our attention—politics, crises, distractions, and the endless pull of entertainment. But as we turn our eyes to Jesus, everything else fades into its proper place. The world grows dim not because it becomes irrelevant, but because His glory outshines it.

In prophecy, we see the trajectory of the earth—it is passing away. Yet, in Christ, we see eternity, glory, and grace. For the Watchers and Warriors of this age, the call is clear: keep your eyes fixed on Jesus. For only in Him will you find strength for today, courage for tomorrow, and hope for eternity.
