Russia launched one of its largest missile and drone assaults of the year against Ukraine, pounding Kyiv with waves of ballistic missiles and hundreds of drones just hours before a major NATO summit. While Ukraine intercepted many incoming drones, officials acknowledged that advanced ballistic missiles penetrated the country's strained air defense network, exposing growing vulnerabilities as the war grinds into another year.
The attack comes amid increasing international concern that Russia is intensifying its campaign to pressure both Ukraine and its Western allies. President Volodymyr Zelensky urged NATO leaders meeting in Ankara to provide additional Patriot missile systems and air-defense interceptors, warning that delays in military support continue to cost civilian lives. Moscow maintained that its strikes targeted military and energy facilities, while Ukraine responded with additional long-range drone attacks against Russian infrastructure, underscoring that neither side appears willing to de-escalate despite mounting casualties and destruction.
