Australia’s government has outlined a dire economic scenario in which escalating war in the Middle East sends global oil prices soaring to $200 per barrel, triggering economic contraction, surging inflation, and widespread financial instability. According to Australia’s latest budget analysis, a prolonged conflict involving Iran and disruptions to critical shipping routes like the Strait of Hormuz and Red Sea could send shockwaves through the global economy. Treasury officials warned that such a scenario would drive inflation sharply higher, increase unemployment, and place enormous strain on industries already struggling with rising energy and supply costs. The warning comes as shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remains heavily disrupted amid growing tensions between Iran and the United States.
Australian officials specifically warned that rising fuel, fertilizer, and petrochemical costs could make some businesses financially unsustainable while severely impacting consumer prices worldwide. Treasurer Jim Chalmers admitted the nation’s economic outlook is now deeply dependent on unpredictable developments overseas, particularly the duration and severity of the Middle East conflict. While higher coal and liquefied natural gas exports could temporarily support parts of Australia’s economy, officials acknowledged that broader global instability would outweigh many of those gains. Brent crude oil has already surged past $100 per barrel as fears grow that ceasefire negotiations with Iran may collapse entirely.
