A relentless heat wave sweeping across the eastern United States has claimed at least 25 lives in New Jersey alone, as temperatures climbed into the triple digits over the Independence Day weekend. Officials reported that many of the victims were elderly or vulnerable individuals discovered inside homes without air conditioning, while others were found outdoors or inside parked vehicles. Widespread power outages affecting nearly one million customers across New Jersey and New York only compounded the crisis, leaving countless residents without relief during the dangerous stretch of extreme heat.
New Jersey Health Commissioner Dr. Raynard Washington said the majority of the fatalities occurred in residences lacking adequate cooling, underscoring the deadly impact of prolonged high temperatures. Emergency crews responded to numerous heat-related medical emergencies as cities across the East Coast struggled under oppressive conditions. With temperatures soaring from Washington, D.C., to New York and beyond, officials urged residents to remain indoors, stay hydrated, and check on elderly neighbors and family members as the heat continued to strain infrastructure and public health resources.
