The leaders of Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic gathered in Hungary this week to revive the Visegrád Four alliance after more than two years of political division. The summit marked the first formal meeting of the regional bloc since disagreements over the war in Ukraine and former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s relationship with Russia strained relations among the member nations. Hungary’s new prime minister, Péter Magyar, declared that “the V4 is back,” emphasizing that Central Europe once again seeks a stronger and more unified voice within the European Union.
During the summit, the leaders discussed expanding cooperation on energy security, immigration policy, agriculture, transportation, and regional infrastructure. Among the proposals was a high-speed rail system connecting the capitals of the four nations, as well as efforts to increase their influence in European decision-making. Magyar also expressed interest in broadening the alliance and strengthening Central Europe’s role within the continent. After years of political tensions and competing interests, the renewed partnership signals that nations within Europe continue searching for greater unity amid growing geopolitical uncertainty.
