42 Lost Bible Pages Found

Apr 29, 2026

Scholars have announced the recovery of 42 lost pages from one of the most important early New Testament manuscripts, a sixth-century Greek document known as Codex H. The manuscript contains an early copy of the Letters of St. Paul and is especially valued because it includes the ancient “Euthalian Apparatus,” a system of study notes and reference tools used to help readers understand portions of Acts, the Catholic epistles, and Paul’s writings. The missing pages had been separated from the manuscript sometime in the 13th century, leaving a major gap in one of Christianity’s most significant textual witnesses.

Researchers say the pages were not physically found in a hidden chamber, but recovered through advanced imaging technology. After the manuscript was disbound centuries ago, portions were reused in other books during a time when parchment was scarce and recycling old manuscripts was common. Because some pages had been re-inked, traces of text transferred onto facing sheets like faint mirror images. Using multispectral imaging, scholars were able to detect and reconstruct these nearly invisible “ghost texts,” effectively restoring lost material from pages long thought gone.
