50 Dead in Deadliest Yemen Fighting Since '22

Jul 6, 2026

The fragile truce that has largely held in Yemen since 2022 appears to be unraveling as fierce fighting erupted south of Hodeidah province, leaving at least 50 Houthi fighters dead and dozens more wounded. Yemeni government officials described the battle as the most intense confrontation since the ceasefire took effect more than four years ago. The clashes centered on the Jabal Dubas front near the city of Hays, where government-aligned Tihama Zaraniq Brigades repelled a major Houthi assault supported by heavy artillery. Government forces also suffered losses, with officials confirming that 15 soldiers were killed during the fighting.

According to Yemeni authorities, the Houthis launched repeated attacks in an effort to push into government-controlled territory, but National Resistance forces reinforced defensive positions and ultimately forced the rebels to retreat after sustaining significant casualties. President Rashad Al-Alimi responded by ordering military commanders to maintain the highest level of readiness and strengthen coordination among government forces to counter any further escalation. Military sources indicated that the battles continued for several days, suggesting that the violence could mark the beginning of a broader offensive rather than an isolated confrontation.
