50,000 Gather for Selichot at Western Wall

Sep 19, 2025

More than 50,000 worshippers gathered at the Western Wall early Friday morning for Selichot, the traditional penitential prayers recited in the days leading up to Yom Kippur. The massive turnout filled the plaza and spilled into the surrounding areas, where giant screens at Jaffa Gate and along the Old City walls broadcast the prayers for thousands more. To ensure inclusivity, the service was also translated into sign language. The evening began with a joyous dedication of a new Torah scroll led by Rabbi Yoshayahu Yosef Pinto, with singing and dancing that brought the crowd together in unity before the solemn prayers commenced.

Among those in attendance were freed hostage Agam Berger and the grieving relatives of Almog Sarusi, who was abducted and murdered by Hamas terrorists in Gaza’s tunnels. Their presence was a stark reminder of the pain still carried by many families. Throughout the service, worshippers lifted prayers for the safe return of hostages, the protection of IDF soldiers, the healing of the wounded, and the peace and security of Israel. A special prayer was also offered in memory of fallen IDF soldiers, underscoring the blend of grief, hope, and faith that defined the solemn yet powerful gathering.
