53 Killed in Palm Sunday Nigeria Attack

Apr 1, 2026

At least 53 people were killed in a series of coordinated Palm Sunday attacks targeting predominantly Christian communities in Nigeria, according to reports from International Christian Concern and Open Doors UK. The deadliest assault occurred in the Ungwan Rukuba area of Plateau State, where armed militants—identified by survivors as either Fulani extremists or Boko Haram—stormed neighborhoods and opened fire on civilians. Entire families were devastated in moments, leaving communities traumatized and once again grieving during what should have been a sacred time of worship and remembrance.

These attacks are part of a broader and ongoing pattern of persecution against Christians in Nigeria, where violence has become tragically common. Reports indicate that the attackers disguised themselves in military-style uniforms, further deepening fear and eroding trust in authorities. Despite curfews and public outrage, many residents believe government responses have been insufficient to stop the bloodshed. The repeated targeting of Christian communities—especially during significant holy days—reveals a calculated effort to intimidate and suppress believers.
