Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has moved its Doomsday Clock to just 85 seconds to midnight—the closest the world has ever been to the symbolic point of catastrophe. First introduced in 1947, the clock is meant to reflect how near humanity stands to self-destruction through its own inventions and decisions. This year’s shift reflects a convergence of escalating dangers: rising nuclear tensions, stalled arms control agreements, accelerating climate instability, and the unchecked advance of emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.
According to the Bulletin’s Science and Security Board, the world is drifting toward crisis not because warnings are lacking, but because leadership is fractured. Nuclear-armed states are locked in conflict and rivalry, treaties such as New START are nearing expiration, and global cooperation is giving way to nationalism and competition. At the same time, AI is rapidly expanding its influence—reshaping information, destabilizing societies, and opening the door to new biological and cyber threats. The message behind the clock is not subtle: humanity is racing forward technologically while morally and spiritually unanchored.
