Netherlands Euthanizes Disabled 2-Year-Old Child
The Netherlands has completed its review of the country's first reported case in which a doctor intentionally ended the life of a child between the ages of one and twelve under its expanded pediatric life-termination framework. The child, nearly two years old, had been born prematurely at 26 weeks and suffered severe, irreversible brain damage, cerebral palsy, cerebral visual impairment, profound developmental delay, respiratory difficulties, swallowing problems, and frequent epileptic seizures that proved extremely difficult to control. At nearly two years old, the child's developmental level was estimated at approximately six weeks, and communication was extremely limited. Doctors believed the child's condition would not significantly improve and that life expectancy was shortened, with potentially fatal complications expected at a young age. The child could not meaningfully participate in the decision. Instead, the parents requested that the child's life be ended, and after consultations and multiple medical opinions, the attending physician agreed. The Dutch review committee has now concluded that the physician satisfied the country's due-care requirements.
