Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed, who could become the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate, is drawing attention after comparing his political philosophy to Jesus Christ while explaining why he embraces the label "radical." During a May podcast interview resurfaced this week, El-Sayed said the Quran provides the moral framework behind his politics and argued that being called radical does not necessarily make someone's ideas wrong. He then pointed to Jesus, saying Christ was considered "radical in his time too," before describing his own approach as standing against corruption and challenging systems that concentrate wealth and power. El-Sayed has made similar arguments more recently, portraying Jesus' teachings as fundamentally about overturning systems controlled by the rich and powerful.
