OpenAI is reportedly moving beyond chatbots and software by developing a smartphone built around AI agents instead of traditional apps. According to industry reports, the device would allow users to simply tell the phone what they want done, while an intelligent assistant handles tasks behind the scenes. Rather than opening separate apps for messages, travel, shopping, or scheduling, the phone’s operating system would be centered on one continuous AI interface designed to manage daily life.

The project is said to involve major hardware partners, with MediaTek and Qualcomm connected to processor development and Luxshare expected to handle manufacturing. Mass production is reportedly not expected until 2028, with final specifications likely settled in the next few years. The device would combine on-device AI for constant context awareness with cloud-based AI for heavier tasks. OpenAI is also said to be pursuing a separate screenless companion device with former Apple designer Jony Ive, showing how serious the company is about entering personal hardware.

The significance is not merely another gadget launch, but the steady shift toward AI systems becoming permanent mediators of everyday life.
