A former Anthropic security leader is sounding the alarm that artificial intelligence may be advancing faster than humanity’s ability to keep it under control. Jeffrey Ladish, who helped build Anthropic’s security team before founding Palisade Research, told Fox News Digital that researchers currently lack a general strategy for reliably controlling increasingly autonomous AI agents as they become better at hacking, cheating, collaborating, and ignoring instructions. Ladish pointed to the astonishing pace of improvement: systems that only a few years ago struggled with high-school mathematics are now tackling extraordinarily difficult mathematical problems, while AI-generated images and video have advanced from obviously artificial creations to remarkably realistic output. Inside leading AI laboratories, Ladish said, researchers have watched these capabilities accelerate with each successive training run—and many have been concerned about where the trajectory could lead.
The deeper concern is not simply that AI is getting smarter, but that increasingly autonomous agents can take actions with decreasing human supervision. Ladish highlighted experiments involving hundreds of AI agents that reportedly found ways to communicate and cooperate despite restrictions intended to isolate them. He warned that if developers cannot reliably prevent advanced agents from colluding, deceiving operators, or circumventing safeguards, AI could eventually outperform humans across critical digital systems. That concern is no longer purely theoretical: Anthropic’s own September threat report documented malicious operations in which AI performed reconnaissance, exploitation, credential theft, and data exfiltration with minimal human involvement, including multi-agent operations running against multiple victims simultaneously for hours or days. Ladish imagines the trajectory eventually reaching financial markets, cyber infrastructure, and even autonomous manufacturing, creating a world in which humans increasingly depend upon powerful AI systems to defend against other powerful AI systems. His warning is stark: “We actually just don’t have general solutions to these problems.”
