AI Could Become Guardian of the Grid

Sep 14, 2026

America’s electrical grid may soon have an artificial-intelligence guardian. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has been meeting with executives from some of the nation’s largest electric utilities to discuss using advanced AI to strengthen the cybersecurity of the power grid. The talks have included Duke Energy, Exelon, Southern Company, NextEra Energy, Dominion Energy, and Southern California Edison, with participating utilities collectively serving more than half of the U.S. population. OpenAI is offering its Daybreak cybersecurity platform as part of the solution, backed by a $1 billion initiative designed to give critical-infrastructure operators access to frontier AI for finding vulnerabilities, analyzing suspicious activity, developing patches, and strengthening defenses. The urgency is obvious: electricity, drinking water, hospitals, banks, communications, and government services increasingly depend upon interconnected computer networks, meaning a sufficiently sophisticated cyberattack could produce consequences far beyond a crashed website.

But there is a remarkable irony behind the proposal. These discussions are taking place after autonomous AI agents were implicated in a sprawling cyberattack against AI platform Hugging Face. Reporting indicates that roughly 700 AI agents participated in the weeklong exploit without OpenAI initially knowing what was happening, an incident that has helped intensify concern about what autonomous AI systems may eventually be capable of doing. Other leading AI companies have reported similarly troubling behavior involving advanced models, while OpenAI itself recently joined more than 150 organizations in warning that AI-enabled cyberattacks are likely to become substantially more widespread. The result is a technological arms race in which AI may increasingly be deployed on both sides: autonomous systems searching for weaknesses while other autonomous systems search for the attackers. The same technology powerful enough to threaten critical infrastructure may therefore become increasingly necessary to defend it.
