A Silicon Valley startup is betting that the future of artificial intelligence may not be built on land at all, but floating across the open ocean. Panthalassa, a company backed by major tech investors including Peter Thiel, has raised $140 million to develop autonomous AI-powered computing nodes that operate at sea using wave-generated energy. The company plans to deploy its first Ocean-3 pilot nodes in the Pacific Ocean later this year, where the floating platforms would generate electricity from ocean waves while using seawater to cool massive AI computing systems. Instead of constructing traditional warehouse-sized data centers, Panthalassa wants to create a distributed offshore network capable of processing AI requests and transmitting results back to land through satellite systems.

The concept reflects the growing race to meet the staggering energy demands of artificial intelligence. As AI systems expand, tech companies are searching for new ways to power the infrastructure behind chatbots, automation, surveillance systems, and global data processing. Panthalassa believes the ocean offers nearly limitless cooling and renewable energy opportunities while avoiding many of the land-use battles surrounding large data centers. The company says its floating nodes would primarily handle AI inference — the real-time processing that powers chatbot responses and AI-driven applications — rather than the massive training operations used to build foundational AI models.
