A Florida community has become the first master-planned development in the United States to install AI-powered robotic beehives in an effort to combat the growing collapse of bee populations threatening global food production. The Angeline development in Land O’ Lakes recently deployed Beewise ’s automated “BeeHome” system, which uses robotics, cameras, sensors, and artificial intelligence to monitor hive conditions and protect colonies from environmental threats. Company officials claim the system has already demonstrated a 70% reduction in colony collapse compared to natural rates, offering new hope as bee populations continue declining across the country.
The advanced system operates much like a robotic beekeeper, automatically inspecting hive frames, tracking queen health, identifying disease, and detecting dangerous infestations from varroa mites — one of the leading causes of bee die-offs worldwide. If threats are detected, the AI system can reportedly intervene on its own by adjusting temperatures inside the hive to eliminate parasites while protecting the bees themselves. Experts warn that the stakes are enormous, as bees are responsible for pollinating roughly 75% of the crops humans consume and nearly 80% of flowering plants globally. With weather extremes, pesticides, disease, and environmental instability increasing, concern over the long-term security of the food supply continues growing.
