AI Impersonation Hits US Officials

Dec 24, 2025

Federal authorities are warning that artificial intelligence–driven impersonation campaigns targeting senior U.S. officials are growing more advanced and more dangerous. In a December 19 alert, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said attackers are now blending AI-generated voice cloning and text with classic social-engineering tactics to convincingly pose as governors, Cabinet members, White House officials, and members of Congress. These operations, active since at least 2023, exploit familiarity and authority to lower defenses, often beginning with tailored texts or calls before pushing targets onto encrypted messaging platforms like Signal or WhatsApp.

Once inside private channels, impersonators deepen the deception—discussing policy issues, floating fake appointments, or proposing high-level meetings—before escalating to requests for authentication codes, sensitive documents, contact lists, or even wire transfers. The FBI stressed that AI has erased many traditional red flags: cloned voices can match tone and cadence, while messages mimic real writing styles and signatures. Officials warn this isn’t just about financial fraud, but intelligence gathering and influence operations that threaten trust itself. In an age when a familiar voice can no longer be assumed real, the advisory urges a cultural shift toward constant verification, strict controls on contact permissions, and skepticism—even when the message sounds exactly right.
