Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

OpenAI has partnered with the American Federation of Teachers (AFT) to launch the National Academy for AI Instruction, a five-year initiative aimed at training 400,000 K-12 educators—roughly one in ten U.S. teachers—to effectively use and shape the future of artificial intelligence in classrooms. While a recent Gallup study found that 60% of educators are already using AI tools, many face challenges in integrating AI in ways that support, rather than replace, the critical human elements of teaching. The Academy will prioritize giving teachers the tools, training, and voice to ensure AI enhances learning, promotes equity, and strengthens critical thinking in students.
As the founding partner, OpenAI is committing $10 million to the effort—$8 million in direct funding and $2 million in in-kind resources such as engineering support and access to computing tools. These investments will support a flagship campus in New York City and additional regional hubs by 2030 (hmm...🤔). The Academy will offer free professional development opportunities, hands-on training, and curriculum resources tailored for real classrooms, with a special focus on high-needs school districts. Teachers will also receive priority access to OpenAI’s education-focused tools and API credits to build custom classroom solutions, ensuring that educators—not just technologists—lead the way in AI integration.
Stay Awake. Keep Watch.
