A North Carolina man is free after spending more than 50 days behind bars for a crime he did not commit, all because an AI-powered facial recognition system got it wrong. Jalil Richardson was accused of stealing a vehicle in Jacksonville, Florida, after law enforcement used surveillance footage and an AI-integrated facial recognition program that claimed he was an 85% match. Despite the fact that Richardson was clocked into his job hundreds of miles away at the time of the crime, the AI match, combined with eyewitness testimony, was enough to lead to his arrest and incarceration.
After nearly two months in jail, Richardson’s attorneys were finally able to prove his alibi, forcing prosecutors to drop the charges. But the damage had already been done. Richardson lost his job, his home, and custody of two of his children while sitting in jail for a crime he never committed. His case is not isolated. Privacy advocates note that this marks at least the 14th known wrongful arrest linked to facial recognition technology in the United States, with many of the victims being people of color. Critics argue that law enforcement agencies are increasingly relying on flawed algorithms that can produce devastating real-world consequences when treated as reliable evidence.
