The global race for artificial intelligence is accelerating even as some of the industry's most influential leaders warn that it may be moving too fast. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for deliberately slowing the advancement of frontier AI models, arguing that developers need more time to understand and contain increasingly capable systems. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman endorsed the idea of “pacing the frontier” and committed OpenAI to using independent safety evaluators, while xAI chief Elon Musk responded that Amodei was right. Their warnings follow growing concern among AI researchers about autonomous systems, cybersecurity threats, biological misuse, economic disruption, and the possibility that future models could become increasingly difficult to control. Amodei has even warned that within months, sufficiently capable swarms of rogue AI agents could potentially cause catastrophic damage across the internet.
President Donald Trump rejected the idea of significantly slowing American AI development, framing the issue primarily as a strategic competition with China. “Whoever wins with AI wins,” Trump said, arguing that reducing America's pace could allow Beijing to gain the technological advantage. House Speaker Mike Johnson similarly indicated that discussions with technology executives were appropriate but cautioned against simply stopping American development while international competitors continue advancing. The disagreement exposes the dilemma at the center of the AI race: even if leading developers believe slowing down would make the technology safer, no company—or nation—wants to be the one that slows while everyone else keeps racing. China has already pushed back against Amodei's proposals, with a Chinese state newspaper portraying his approach as an attempt to preserve American technological dominance. The AI race therefore increasingly resembles a contest in which competitors may recognize the danger ahead while simultaneously believing that stopping is even more dangerous.
