A newly published peer-reviewed study has found that artificial intelligence systems are absorbing and reproducing antisemitic stereotypes found in the vast amounts of human-generated data used to train them. Researchers from Israeli universities examined several leading large language models, including ChatGPT, DeepSeek, and Mistral, and discovered that the systems often associated Jewish identities with traits historically linked to antisemitic stereotypes. The findings highlight how centuries-old prejudices can quietly persist within modern technologies that are increasingly shaping communication, decision-making, and public discourse.
To uncover hidden biases, researchers developed a series of experiments that bypassed the safeguards AI systems use to suppress offensive responses. After generating fictional biographies associated with Jewish and non-Jewish names, researchers removed all references to religion and ethnicity before asking both humans and AI systems to evaluate the personalities described. The results consistently showed that characters associated with Jewish identities were perceived as more intelligent, successful, and competent, but also as less warm, less trustworthy, and more dominant. These patterns closely mirrored longstanding cultural stereotypes that have fueled antisemitism for generations.
