Google researchers are sounding the alarm after uncovering what they describe as one of the first known cyberattacks in which artificial intelligence was used to identify and weaponize a previously unknown software vulnerability. According to reports, the hackers leveraged AI to discover a so-called “zero-day” flaw capable of bypassing two-factor authentication protections on a popular administrative tool. Zero-day vulnerabilities are especially dangerous because they are unknown even to the developers responsible for securing the software, giving attackers a window of opportunity before patches or defenses can be deployed. Google says the attack was ultimately stopped before mass exploitation occurred, but company analysts warned it may only represent the beginning of a much larger problem.
The incident highlights growing fears surrounding AI’s rapidly advancing capabilities in coding, automation, and cybersecurity. Google researchers reportedly found evidence that the malware used in the attempted attack contained characteristics strongly associated with large language models, including AI-generated code structures and hallucinated text. Security experts now warn that AI systems capable of autonomously discovering software weaknesses could dramatically accelerate cyber warfare, allowing attackers to scale operations far beyond traditional hacking methods. The concerns intensified further after reports that advanced AI models are now capable of identifying vulnerabilities across major operating systems and browsers, prompting some companies to tightly restrict access to these tools out of fear they could be weaponized.
