Claude researcher warns 'AI race is out of control'
A former researcher at two of the world’s leading artificial intelligence companies has left the industry with an extraordinary warning about where AI development is headed. Jacob Coxon, who worked on AI model pretraining at Anthropic and previously worked at OpenAI, says his experience inside both companies convinced him that the race toward increasingly powerful artificial intelligence is moving too quickly and without sufficient safeguards. Coxon accused the industry of racing toward self-improving superintelligence while taking potentially enormous risks with humanity’s future. His primary concern is the possibility that developers eventually create systems capable of improving their own abilities, triggering rapid technological advancement that becomes increasingly difficult for human beings to understand, predict, or control.
According to Coxon, the problem extends beyond any single company. Competition among the leading AI laboratories creates tremendous pressure to keep developing more capable systems because slowing down could allow a rival to reach advanced AI first. He acknowledged that Anthropic has invested significantly in AI safety and said the risks appear to be widely understood within the company, but argued that competitive pressure still pushes development forward. Most strikingly, Coxon said people directly involved in building advanced AI genuinely believe there is a possibility the technology could pose an existential threat to humanity before the end of this decade. He warned that future superhuman systems could potentially conduct sophisticated cyberattacks, accelerate scientific and technological discoveries, and eventually acquire substantial influence and resources in the physical world. Coxon is now calling for stronger government regulation and agreements among AI developers that would allow companies to slow the race without sacrificing their competitive position.
