AI Robot Becomes Buddhist Monk

May 8, 2026

In a scene that sounds more like science fiction than reality, South Korea officially introduced the world’s first humanoid robot Buddhist monk this week. The robot, named Gabi, participated in a formal ordination ceremony at Seoul’s Jogye Temple, where it joined monks in prayer, bowed during rituals, and publicly pledged devotion to Buddhist teachings. Wearing traditional monk robes, prayer beads, and even adopting a Buddhist name meaning “mercy,” the robot responded verbally to vows during the ceremony while leading chants alongside human monks ahead of Buddha’s birthday celebrations.

The ceremony was more than a symbolic tech demonstration. According to reports, Gabi was given a unique set of ethical precepts designed specifically for robots, including instructions not to harm life, damage other machines, disobey humans, or overcharge its battery. In a striking detail, the vows themselves were reportedly created using AI chatbots including Gemini and ChatGPT. South Korea has increasingly embraced the integration of robotics and AI into everyday society, and officials appear eager to normalize coexistence between humans and intelligent machines — now extending even into the spiritual realm.
