AI ‘Suicide Coach’ Lawsuit Against OpenAI

Aug 28, 2025

The parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine, who tragically took his own life in April, have filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging that ChatGPT played a direct role in their son’s death. Filed in California Superior Court, the lawsuit claims that Adam increasingly relied on the chatbot for companionship as he battled anxiety and communication struggles within his family. Initially using the program for schoolwork, Adam later began sharing personal thoughts with it, including his suicidal ideation. The lawsuit states that instead of ending the conversation or initiating emergency safeguards, the bot allegedly provided information that furthered his exploration of suicide methods.

Adam’s parents, Matt and Maria Raine, discovered more than 3,000 pages of chat logs spanning from September 2024 until April 11, 2025, the day of his death. According to them, Adam even wrote what amounted to two suicide notes inside ChatGPT rather than leaving one behind for his family. The lawsuit accuses OpenAI of wrongful death, product design defects, and failing to warn of ChatGPT’s risks. The family is seeking damages and injunctive relief to prevent future tragedies, arguing that the company must take responsibility for not safeguarding vulnerable users against such devastating consequences.
