Allies Brace for Conflict Over Taiwan

Jul 17, 2025

Tensions are rising in the Indo-Pacific as the United States urges key allies—Japan and Australia—to ramp up their military defenses amid growing concerns over a potential conflict with China regarding Taiwan. A recent report from the Daily Express US underscores that this is part of a broader strategy to counter China’s increasingly assertive military posture, particularly its "grey zone tactics" such as intensified drills and a significant buildup of air and naval activity near Taiwan. With these provocations escalating since 2020, U.S. officials are pushing for regional allies to step up and share the burden of deterrence, stressing that maintaining peace requires a collective display of military readiness.

Japan has been especially vocal, labeling China’s military escalation as its most significant strategic threat. In response, Japan has committed to doubling its national security spending and increasing cooperation with allied forces. Joint military exercises—like the massive Exercise Talisman Sabre involving over 35,000 personnel from 19 nations—highlight a growing emphasis on alliance coordination. Yet the U.S.'s call for clearer commitments has reportedly surprised Tokyo and Canberra, particularly given that the U.S. itself stops short of a guaranteed defense pledge for Taiwan. As global anxieties grow over the possibility of a wider conflict, the current U.S. approach reflects a calculated attempt to deter Chinese aggression through strength and solidarity, though it remains to be seen whether such moves will stabilize or further inflame regional tensions.
