Amazon Tests Robots for Home Delivery

Jun 6, 2025

Amazon is reportedly working on artificial intelligence software to power humanoid robots capable of delivering packages—potentially even stepping directly out of Rivian vans to make drop-offs. According to The Information, the tech giant has set up a testing facility—dubbed a "humanoid park"—in San Francisco, where robots are being trained on an indoor obstacle course roughly the size of a coffee shop. The software is Amazon’s own, while the robotic hardware is sourced from outside developers. Even with a human driver still behind the wheel, the concept would allow robots to deliver to one address while the driver services another, theoretically improving efficiency and reducing delivery times.

Amazon’s ambitions extend beyond the testing zone. After trials in its humanoid park, the company reportedly plans to send these robots on real-world delivery “field trips.” It has already used humanoid robots like Agility Robotics’ Digit in warehouses, where they assist human workers. Amazon’s broader investment in automation includes its Zoox self-driving unit and recent drone delivery advancements in the UK. While the technology is progressing rapidly, experts caution that performance in controlled settings doesn’t always translate to unpredictable real-world environments. As one robotics professor noted, the complexity increases significantly when robots must navigate varying terrain, pets, and children—posing real challenges for dependable, widespread deployment.
