A stunning archaeological discovery beneath the waters of Wisconsin’s Lake Mendota is forcing historians to rethink the timeline of human civilization in North America. Six newly uncovered dugout canoes—one dated to around 5,200 years old—place an organized, technologically capable culture in the American Midwest at the same time Egypt was building the Great Pyramid. These massive boats, carved from single trees using fire and stone tools, reveal a society engaged in trade, travel, and long-term settlement thousands of years earlier than most textbooks have ever acknowledged.

In total, sixteen ancient canoes have now been found clustered along what appear to be ancient travel routes beneath the lake’s surface.
