Archaeologists working beneath the southwestern corner of the Temple Mount have uncovered an extraordinarily rare, 1,300-year-old lead pendant bearing a double-sided seven-branched menorah. Discovered in Jerusalem’s Davidson Archaeological Park, the artifact dates to the Late Byzantine period—a time when Jews were officially prohibited from entering the city. Made of nearly pure lead and designed to be worn as a necklace, the pendant is only the second known example of its kind in the world. Its presence in Jerusalem challenges long-held assumptions about Jewish absence during this era and points to quiet but persistent devotion to the holy city despite imperial bans.
Researchers believe the pendant likely served as an amulet, symbolizing identity, faith, and hope for national restoration long after the Temple’s destruction. The menorah, already a powerful emblem of remembrance and expectation, appears here as a personal declaration of connection to Jerusalem and the God of Israel. For students of Bible prophecy, this discovery reinforces the unbroken bond between the Jewish people and their capital—a bond Scripture affirms will never be severed. Even in times of exile and restriction, the evidence continues to testify that Jerusalem has never ceased to be the heart of Jewish hope and prophetic destiny (Isaiah 62:1–7).
