Tensions erupted in Melbourne’s CBD when a group of masked anti-Israel protesters stormed Miznon, an Israeli-owned restaurant on Hardware Lane, terrifying diners and damaging property. The mob, reportedly consisting of around 20 individuals, threw chairs, food, and glassware while chanting “Death to the IDF.” Their aggressive outburst followed a larger pro-Palestinian protest involving approximately 80 demonstrators nearby on Swanston Street. As the breakaway group moved toward the restaurant, they hurled traffic bollards at passing cars and shouted profanities. Disturbing footage captured patrons screaming as the protesters overturned tables and furniture inside the venue.
Police swiftly responded, blocking off the laneway and attempting to contain the chaos. One protester was arrested for hindering officers and later released on summons, while others had their identities recorded for ongoing investigation. Victoria Police emphasized their commitment to protecting the right to peaceful protest but condemned the violent conduct, labeling it “anti-social and unacceptable.” The disturbance shocked not only Miznon’s guests but also other restaurant patrons in the lively Hardware Lane precinct, several of whom witnessed or experienced damage. Meanwhile, in a deeply troubling development, a nearby Jewish synagogue was also targeted in what authorities believe to be an arson attack, compounding fears of rising antisemitic violence in the area.
