Anti-Israel Protests Sweep Across Italy

Sep 23, 2025

Italian cities erupted in chaos on Monday as pro-Palestinian demonstrations spiraled into violence, leaving streets filled with tear gas and clashes between protesters and police. The protests, organized by trade unions and aimed at condemning Israel’s actions in Gaza, swept across the country with tens of thousands rallying in Rome while dockworkers blocked major ports. In Milan, rioters stormed the central station, smashing windows and hurling chairs at police, prompting officers to fire tear gas. By nightfall, over 10 arrests had been made and nearly 60 officers were reported injured.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the unrest, warning that the violence had “nothing to do with solidarity” and promising consequences for those involved. Her government has remained firm in its support of Israel, refusing calls to recognize a Palestinian state. Meanwhile, demonstrations flared in other cities as police used water cannons in Venice, while Genoa, Livorno, and Trieste saw port blockades aimed at halting arms shipments to Israel. In Naples, protesters stormed train tracks, Rome witnessed tens of thousands blocking a major ring road, and Bologna’s motorway was shut down before police intervened—signaling that the unrest had spread nationwide.
