Antisemitic Attacks Surge in NYC

Apr 6, 2026

The New York Police Department has reported a troubling rise in hate crimes across New York City, with over half of all confirmed incidents in the first quarter of 2026 identified as antisemitic. According to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, 55% of confirmed hate crimes—78 out of 143 cases—targeted Jewish individuals or communities, despite Jews representing only about 10% of the city’s population. Overall, hate crimes increased by 11.7% compared to the previous period, highlighting a growing concern for public safety and community relations.

The department has also introduced a new reporting system aimed at increasing transparency. Hate crimes are now divided into two categories: reported incidents and confirmed cases. Reported crimes are those initially flagged for investigation by the NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force, while confirmed hate crimes are those that meet the legal criteria under New York State law after a full review involving the department’s legal bureau. This shift is intended to provide clearer insight into the scope and severity of hate-related offenses.

The data underscores a disproportionate targeting of the Jewish community, raising alarm among officials and residents alike. As antisemitic incidents continue to rise, the new reporting measures aim to better track, understand, and respond to these crimes. The findings reflect a broader trend of increasing hostility and highlight the importance of vigilance and accountability in addressing hate-driven violence.
