Antisemitic Poster in Rome Sparks Outrage

Jul 4, 2025

An antisemitic poster discovered at a bus stop in Rome’s bustling Trastevere district ignited widespread outrage on Tuesday. The image depicted a Nazi soldier with a Star of David in place of a swastika on his armband—a chilling and provocative twist meant to incite hatred. The bus stop, located in Sonnino Square and frequented by thousands daily, became the center of attention as Italy's public transit authority, ATAC, acted quickly to have the poster removed and announced plans to file a police report. This disturbing incident follows a similar antisemitic mural that recently appeared in the city, showing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu kissing Adolf Hitler—highlighting what many say is a troubling trend of rising antisemitism in Italy.

Victor Fadlun, president of Rome’s Jewish community, praised ATAC’s swift action but warned that such acts reflect a growing climate of intolerance. “Even with the authorities' response, this act underscores a dangerous rise in antisemitism, fueled by reckless rhetoric and hate,” he stated. Fadlun emphasized that the Jewish community will remain vigilant and resist any attempt to erase or dishonor Jewish identity and memory. “We will not be intimidated,” he affirmed, urging all citizens to stand united in defending democratic values. He reminded the public that combating antisemitism is not just a Jewish responsibility, but a collective moral obligation. Similar incidents have been reported elsewhere in Italy, including Milan, where antisemitic graffiti reading “Israelis not welcome here” was promptly removed by local officials.
