The survey, conducted in late June, found that only 24% of Australians hold a favorable opinion of Jews, with a mere 9% expressing a “very positive” view. In contrast, 28% reported negative attitudes, including 8% who said their views were “very negative.” Among young Australians aged 18–34, nearly 20% reported witnessing or hearing about antisemitic incidents—rising to 25% in New South Wales. The data highlights an escalating trend in hostility, echoing the rise in antisemitic acts across the country, including violent attacks and vandalism targeting Jewish communities and institutions.

The poll also reveals that nearly half of Australians expect their political leaders, particularly at the local level, to take a strong stand against religious and ethnic intolerance. In light of several recent attacks—such as the firebombing of the Adat Israel synagogue in Melbourne and the vandalism of Israeli chef Eyal Shani’s restaurant—Jewish communities are demanding urgent action. In response, CAM has announced an Emergency Summit Against Antisemitism, set to take place September 3–5 on the Gold Coast. The summit aims to bring together leaders from government, faith, and civil society to develop a unified national strategy. CAM Director Sacha Roytman Dratwa stressed the urgency of the moment, calling for bipartisan cooperation and a zero-tolerance approach to hate, warning that Australia’s reputation as a safe haven for Jews is at risk.
