Apple has quietly advanced its Digital ID system by enabling age verification through credentials stored in Apple Wallet. Users can now confirm they are over 18 for actions such as creating an Apple Account, updating iOS, changing safety settings, or downloading adult-rated apps. The credential is created using a U.S. passport, allowing Apple to verify age without requiring traditional physical documents each time. Though the rollout came with little fanfare, it marks a significant expansion beyond the program’s original use at TSA airport checkpoints.
The move reflects a much larger global trend as governments across the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and Australia push new age-verification laws for online platforms. Major tech companies including Apple, Google, Meta, and others are rapidly building identity systems to meet these mandates. Instead of relying on outside vendors, many platforms want operating-system level verification tools built directly into phones. That means the device in your pocket is steadily becoming the gateway for proving age, identity, and future access to digital services.
Apple first launched Digital ID as an alternative to slow-moving state mobile driver’s license programs, with acceptance initially limited to airports. Now the system is expanding into online use, and many see it as the foundation for broader identity checks ahead. The significance is not one company update, but the accelerating construction of systems capable of controlling access, verifying identity, and managing participation in commerce and communication. What begins as convenience and child safety often becomes infrastructure—and infrastructure rarely moves backward once fully established.
