Arizona State University is drawing attention over a list of courses reportedly promoted to incoming freshmen that includes classes exploring LGBTQ identity, sexuality, witchcraft, and other subjects reflecting the rapidly changing values of modern academia. Among ASU's current offerings are programs devoted to Queer and Sexuality Studies and courses examining gender, sexuality, intersectionality, and social transformation. The university also offers Witchcraft and Heresy in Europe, a history course examining witchcraft, heresy, the Inquisition, and persecution in European history. These courses are academic studies rather than instruction in practicing witchcraft, an important distinction, but together they demonstrate the dramatically different worldview students can encounter when they leave home and enter today's university environment. ASU itself describes its School of Social Transformation as preparing students to create social change that is "democratic, inclusive and just."
The larger concern for Christian parents is not simply that controversial subjects are being discussed at universities. Higher education should expose students to history, competing ideas, and difficult questions. The deeper issue is the worldview through which those subjects are increasingly interpreted. ASU's Social Transformation curriculum, for example, explicitly examines race, gender, sexuality, disability, structures of power, and strategies for creating what it describes as a just society. For young Christians entering college without a solid biblical foundation, the university years can therefore become far more than an academic experience—they can become a collision between the worldview they received at home and competing definitions of identity, sexuality, morality, truth, and even spirituality.
