A deadly heatwave continues to grip much of Europe, leaving at least 18 people dead across France as record-breaking temperatures shatter historical norms. Among the most heartbreaking tragedies were the deaths of two young children, ages two and four, who were discovered in a hot vehicle outside their home. Temperatures climbed above 107 degrees in parts of France, setting new records in cities such as Bordeaux and Poitiers. Schools have closed or shortened schedules, transportation systems have struggled, and emergency officials have issued repeated warnings as millions attempt to endure the relentless heat.
The scorching temperatures have extended well beyond France. Spain, Britain, and other parts of Europe are experiencing extraordinary conditions as hot air from the Sahara becomes trapped over the continent in what meteorologists describe as an “Omega block” weather pattern. Drowning deaths have increased as people seek relief in lakes and rivers, while elderly residents remain especially vulnerable. Forecasters now warn that portions of the United Kingdom could break June temperature records that have stood for decades, continuing a pattern of increasingly severe weather events across Europe.
