Baal Controversy Rocks State Department

Baal out: Top diplomat's worry about pagan god elicits eye rolls

An unusual controversy has erupted inside the U.S. State Department over plans for America’s pavilion at Expo 2027 in Belgrade, Serbia. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau reportedly intervened after becoming concerned about a proposed golden bucking-bull statue intended to celebrate the American West. In an August email, Landau wrote that he remained concerned about the “Golden Bull imagery,” noting that the biblical golden calf is frequently portrayed as a bull and that bull imagery has historically been associated with idolatry and materialism. According to Axios, Landau’s concerns produced “eye rolls and snickers” among some State Department officials, who regarded the issue as an unnecessary distraction. The project was reportedly paused while officials worked toward a design that would retain the Western theme without creating unwanted religious associations.
