Jordanian officials have called an emergency meeting of Arab and Islamic foreign ministers, expressing concern over increased visits by Jewish groups to the Temple Mount, recent restrictions affecting Muslim authorities, and growing calls within Israel to expand Jewish prayer rights at Judaism's holiest site. Jordan, which has held a custodial role over the Islamic holy sites in Jerusalem for more than a century, warned that any changes could ignite a broader regional religious conflict.
The Temple Mount remains one of the most contested pieces of real estate on earth. It is revered by Jews as the location of the First and Second Temples and by Muslims as the site of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock.
