Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir has called for the assassination of Syrian leader Ahmed al-Sharaa, citing alleged atrocities committed against the Druze population by jihadist militias linked to al-Sharaa’s regime. Referring to him by his nom de guerre, al-Julani, Ben-Gvir labeled him a jihadist who should be eliminated, highlighting brutal acts such as beheadings and rapes allegedly carried out by forces under his leadership. The call comes in light of al-Sharaa’s background as a former Al-Qaeda leader and his role in leading Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, which overthrew the Assad regime in 2024. Ben-Gvir emphasized solidarity with the Druze, noting their contributions to Israeli security forces and calling for decisive action against jihadist threats near Israel’s borders.

Other Israeli leaders echoed the urgency. Former defense minister Avigdor Liberman stressed the need for a new security framework along the Syrian border to shield the Druze and eliminate jihadist militias operating within 60–70 kilometers of Israeli territory. Opposition leader Benny Gantz also affirmed support for the Druze and warned that if Syria continues down a radical path, all strategic options should be considered. Meanwhile, Israel Defense Forces launched targeted airstrikes on Syrian militias and regime sites in response to recent attacks on Druze villages. Defense Minister Israel Katz defended the actions, stating that they were necessary to prevent further massacres and protect Israel’s Druze citizens and allies, reinforcing the nation’s stance on mutual responsibility and regional stability.
