Bible Beliefs Ruled Criminal in Finland

Mar 27, 2026

In a controversial and closely divided ruling, Finland’s Supreme Court has convicted parliamentarian Päivi Räsänen of “hate speech” for publishing a Christian pamphlet on biblical marriage and sexual ethics. Though she was acquitted of charges related to a Bible verse shared on social media, the court determined that her earlier writings constituted an offense for allegedly insulting a protected group. The ruling includes financial penalties and even orders for the removal and destruction of the material—raising serious concerns about the limits of free speech and religious expression in a Western democracy.

The case has drawn global attention not only because of its legal implications but because it directly challenges the public expression of biblical convictions. Prosecutors argued that while Scripture itself can be cited, an individual’s interpretation of it may be deemed criminal. Critics warn that this sets a dangerous precedent, where longstanding Christian teachings could be reclassified as punishable offenses under evolving legal frameworks. What was once protected as freedom of belief is now increasingly being scrutinized, regulated, and, in some cases, silenced.
