Bill Gates is sounding one of his starkest warnings yet about artificial intelligence, saying the technology could become powerful enough to contribute to events causing as many as a billion deaths if adequate safeguards are not established. Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” the Microsoft co-founder said the greatest immediate danger is the combination of increasingly capable AI systems with people who intend to use them maliciously. Gates specifically pointed to bioterrorism as a frightening example, explaining that the same AI capable of helping researchers design new medicines could potentially assist someone attempting to develop a biological weapon. He stopped short of predicting that AI will wipe out humanity, but argued that the technology’s destructive potential is unprecedented and that relying entirely on voluntary safeguards from technology companies would be irresponsible.
Gates is therefore calling for government-required monitoring and safeguards around the most sophisticated AI models, particularly systems capable of assisting with biological research, cyberattacks, and other potentially catastrophic activities. His comments come amid a growing debate among some of the most prominent figures in artificial intelligence over how quickly increasingly powerful models should be developed. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and others have warned about potentially catastrophic risks, while Gates argues that safety requirements could be implemented without dramatically slowing beneficial AI development. The paradox is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore: the same technology being promoted to discover medicines, improve education, accelerate scientific research, and solve enormous human problems could also dramatically increase the capabilities available to a malicious individual or organization. AI does not need to become conscious or decide to exterminate humanity for the danger to become real; it may only need to give dangerous people abilities that previously required governments, laboratories, enormous budgets, and teams of highly trained specialists.
