Biometric ID Required for Travel

Somalia has introduced a sweeping new requirement mandating biometric digital identification for citizens traveling between federal states. Beginning this week, passengers departing domestically from Mogadishu’s Aden Adde International Airport must present a national biometric ID card before boarding flights. Officials say the measure is designed to digitize internal migration systems and monitor the movement of individuals across the country. Authorities also claim the policy strengthens national security and supports efforts to manage the complex challenges facing Somalia’s federal structure.

The biometric ID initiative is part of a broader push by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) to integrate digital identity into nearly every aspect of civic life. In recent months, the same ID has become mandatory for opening bank accounts, updating financial records, applying for driver’s licenses, and registering vehicles. Somalia has also implemented the PISCES biometric border management system, used in more than twenty countries and backed by international partners, allowing authorities to collect and process digital identity data at airports and other checkpoints. Together, these measures are building a centralized system capable of verifying identity and tracking movement across both physical and financial networks.
