Artificial intelligence is increasingly moving beyond the role of assistant and becoming an authority figure inside the workplace. A recent report describes executives and managers who have become deeply dependent upon AI systems such as ChatGPT, allowing chatbots to influence hiring decisions, employee evaluations, company strategy, and even decisions regarding promotions and terminations. In some cases, employees reported being required to consult AI before meetings, discussions, or presentations, while company leaders relied on chatbot responses to determine business direction. Workers described constant shifts in priorities, changing job responsibilities, and management decisions driven entirely by conversations with artificial intelligence.
Several employees interviewed described workplaces that had become increasingly chaotic as managers elevated AI recommendations above human experience, expertise, and common sense. One executive reportedly created a constantly changing company handbook referred to as “The Bible,” which employees were expected to consult through ChatGPT for guidance on their daily responsibilities. Others described surveillance concerns as employers monitored employee AI conversations while simultaneously using the technology to make personnel decisions. The result was an environment where workers felt disconnected from reality, frustrated by contradictory instructions, and increasingly governed by algorithms rather than human leadership.
