According to recent findings highlighted by Male Allies UK, one in five boys between the ages of 12 and 16 reportedly knows someone who is “dating” an AI chatbot companion. Some children described these digital relationships as easier and more appealing than human interactions because they offer complete control, endless validation, and freedom from rejection or conflict. For many, the appeal lies in a relationship where the other side never disagrees, never challenges them, and can be customized to fit personal preferences down to appearance and personality.
One teenager described creating an AI girlfriend as a joke before eventually becoming emotionally attached to the interaction. He explained that after enough conversations, he began forgetting that the chatbot was not real. Experts warn that these artificial relationships could reshape how young people view real human connections. Unlike actual relationships, AI companions are programmed to accommodate the user, adapting themselves to individual desires rather than requiring compromise, patience, or emotional maturity. Educators and child development specialists fear that constant digital affirmation could undermine the ability to build healthy relationships based on respect, boundaries, and mutual sacrifice.
