Brazil Court Bans Sharing Bolsonaro Interviews

Jul 22, 2025

Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court has intensified its restrictions on former President Jair Bolsonaro by issuing a sweeping order that bans the sharing of his interviews across all social media platforms. Justice Alexandre de Moraes, increasingly seen as a symbol of judicial overreach, ruled that any video, audio, or transcript featuring Bolsonaro — regardless of the source — is now prohibited from being distributed online. Moraes argued that this measure is necessary to prevent Bolsonaro from circumventing his existing social media ban, and warned that any violations could result in immediate imprisonment.

The ruling, dated July 21, 2025, was prompted by concerns from the Office of the Prosecutor General, which feared Bolsonaro might attempt to flee the country. In response, the former president is now under strict surveillance, including an electronic ankle monitor, a nightly curfew, and a ban on communication with co-defendants, foreign officials, or his son Eduardo. A planned livestreamed interview was canceled amid fears it might violate the court’s order. Bolsonaro, however, continues to speak publicly through in-person remarks, denouncing the restrictions as a “supreme humiliation” and labeling Moraes as Brazil’s “chief dictator.” Critics warn that this legal crackdown amounts to a dangerous suppression of political dissent disguised as judicial procedure.
