Brazil Targets Missionary Tech Outreach

Aug 14, 2025

The Guardian recently ran a headline claiming, “Missionaries using secret audio devices to evangelize Brazil’s isolated peoples,” casting the work in a suspicious, almost ominous light. The so-called “secret devices” are, in reality, small solar-powered radios loaded with Bible passages and Gospel messages—a tool missionaries have used for decades to reach remote and often inaccessible areas. These devices provide the Scriptures in local or trade languages, making it possible for those who have never seen a Bible or met a Christian to hear the gospel for the first time. But to a secular worldview, even the possibility of an Indigenous person hearing about Jesus is framed as a threat.

Brazilian policy since 1987 forbids evangelizing certain tribes unless they initiate contact. Officials have labeled these discreet gospel tools as “stealthy” and “almost impossible to combat,” as though sharing the hope of Christ were an act of subversion. Yet the biblical mission has always faced resistance. Acts 4 records how Peter and John refused to stop speaking about Christ despite direct orders from authorities. The Great Commission (Matthew 28:19) does not exclude dangerous regions or hostile governments—it includes “all nations.” This is not cultural imperialism, but love in action: risking opposition, hostility, and even death to bring the message of salvation to those without hope.

Such resistance to the Gospel aligns with the growing spiritual darkness foretold for the last days. As 2 Timothy 4:3-4 warns, the time will come when people “will not endure sound doctrine” but will turn aside to myths. Efforts to suppress evangelism—whether through policy, propaganda, or portraying missionaries as villains—fit the pattern of a world increasingly hostile to the truth of Christ. Yet prophecy also assures us that the gospel will be preached to every nation before the end (Matthew 24:14). No government decree or media spin can halt God’s mission, and faithful believers will continue to speak His name until every tribe and tongue has heard.
