Britain’s Green Party of England and Wales has formally adopted a resolution declaring Zionism to be a form of racism and establishing the party as explicitly anti-Zionist. Meeting at its annual conference in Brighton, party members approved the controversial measure by a vote of 1,022 to 813. The resolution defines Zionism as an “ethnonationalist” project and says it should be “treated as any other form of racism.” Even more consequentially, the new policy supports the creation of a “single democratic Palestinian State in all of historic Palestine” with Jerusalem as its capital, rather than affirming Israel and a Palestinian state existing alongside one another. The Green Party’s own official statement confirms that the resolution also embraces the Palestinian right of return, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement, and a full arms embargo against Israel. Supporters insist the policy targets a political ideology rather than Jewish people and say the party remains committed to opposing antisemitism.
The vote has produced sharp backlash both inside and outside the party. Four of the Green Party’s five members of Parliament had reportedly opposed the measure, while leader Zack Polanski—who is Jewish—did not participate in the final vote. British Jewish organizations warned before the vote that defining Zionism as racism could stigmatize large numbers of Jews for supporting Jewish self-determination in their ancestral homeland. Israel responded even more forcefully. Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced that Polanski would be barred from entering Israel, while President Isaac Herzog called the decision “a disgrace.” The resolution comes at a time when antisemitism remains a serious concern across Britain and other Western nations, making the decision to classify the movement for Jewish national self-determination as racist especially explosive. Whatever one's position on Israeli government policies or the war in Gaza, this vote moves beyond criticism of a particular Israeli government: the adopted policy directly challenges the Zionist basis for Israel's continued existence as a Jewish state.
