Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has publicly acknowledged that Canada is failing its Jewish citizens as antisemitism reaches levels not seen since World War II. Speaking at Toronto’s Holy Blossom Temple, Carney announced the formation of a federal advisory council aimed at combating antisemitism and hate crimes. His remarks come amid a dramatic surge in anti-Jewish incidents following Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, with Jewish institutions, businesses, and university campuses increasingly becoming targets. Although Jewish Canadians represent only about one percent of the nation’s population, government statistics indicate they account for roughly 70 percent of all religion-based hate crime victims reported in 2024.
The Canadian government plans to use the new council to identify the drivers behind rising antisemitism, improve data collection, and recommend enhanced security and educational initiatives. Carney emphasized that combating antisemitism does not require suppressing free speech or legitimate political debate, but rather ensuring that no community is pushed out of public life through intimidation and hatred. The announcement follows previous efforts by Canada to invest millions of dollars into security measures protecting Jewish schools, synagogues, and community centers. Jewish leaders welcomed the acknowledgement, arguing that the crisis can no longer be ignored.
